Weirder and Weirder

Mission: Knock Knock
Location: Holodeck 1
Timeline: Arrival at Starbase 2

Henry watched Keiran and Marcus running around the holographic yard as Patricia leaned against the fence. He’d been quiet for awhile and she didn’t like it.

“So how’re the new crew?”

He glanced over to her. “They were…aloof. Went down to greet them since I didn’t have anything pressing and they were polite but not personable. Matter of fact only one of the three even replied to me.”

“That’s weird.”

“Par for the course recently. Every other day we have issues with the ship’s main grid. I’ve got that young engineer working on it, she seems to have a good head on her shoulders.”

“Yea I know her,” Patricia replied though she didn’t feel she needed to offer how she was familiar with her and share Millie’s business. “How about the briefing?”

“How’d you know about that?”

She shot her father in law a side glance.

“Oh, yea of course. Admiral Calo has given us a very important mission. A little more action than we’ve been used to as of late.” He knew he got her attention with that. “Our trip to 134 was to deliver parts for some new counter-intelligence system. Now we’re headed back there to pick it up and deliver it.”

“Why would we go there, come here, and then go back?”

“Seems like these new crew we picked up, the talkative ones,
are part of this.”

“So where are we taking it?” she asked.

“There is a faction inside the Gorn Hegemony called the Black Crest. Your basic reptilian troublemakers. Intel suggests that they have set up a base on a world on the outer boundary of Gorn space to act as a staging post for attacks along the Klingon border. We’re going to deploy whatever it is they’re building at 134 and that will improve the situation in some fashion.” He knew what she was going to ask. “No, you don’t get to fight one.”

“I can take it.”

“I’m sure you can.” He used the same tone when one of his kids would make an improbable even if fun boast.

“I thought you said there would be some action.”

“Might be. The Gorn don’t exactly know we’re coming. Some concerns that there may be some leadership inclined to support Black Crest.”

“So we may not exactly get the welcome wagon.”

“We may blow the welcome wagon to hell and back.”

She smiled at that. He wished he could too.
