Work in progress

Posted on Mon May 17th, 2021 @ 10:53am by Commander Brielle Jayde & Warrant Officer Michael Joustra

Mission: Side Stories
Location: Brielle's Office

Joustra was tapping his foot as he was in the Ctac's office. He was busy these last few days and just need the Ctac's files on the security staff.

Brielle finally managed to get a minute to go to her office. "Sorry, knew you were waiting, got stopped in the corridor."

" Occupational hazard, what helps is grunting and scowling keeps the ensign's and crewmen away, ma'am." Joustra said

"Sad but true," she said as she moved to the other side of her desk. "You can have a seat if you want. I almost had everything ready to go for you, I think." She looked over what was on the PADD on her desk.

"Good, have the psych evals and medical records already. Need to swap the rotations and mix everything up a bit." Joustra said as he took a seat.

Brielle smirked, "I've marked a few that shouldn't be put together, mostly because they honestly don't get along. Otherwise, a change in rotation sounds like a plan. Make sure it doesn't interfere if they are assigned to other departments too."

" Yeah, have to look at those. Also have a few transfer requests and already reassigned the master-at-arms to Luna as Starfleet security liaison, closer to his wife and kids and he can think of retirement there. Was either that or keep him on and assign the senior chief to some meaningless shift or have ensign Lowry keep doing his job. " he went through the padd." We got an Assistant chief coming in.... Lieutenant Stewart?"

"Now, how did I not know about that? Stewart has been on the ship before, sort of crazy. Thought I'd hear about transfers but apparently not that one." She shrugged, "Busy family life will do that." She double-checked the PADD that she had and moved the old files on Stewart over. "Likely not up to date but you won't have any issues with her at all."

"Yeah, she's covering both our departments. I'll try to keep her workload light put her on the away team detail so I don't get sent down. Been shot at enough in my years... let the higher ranking people have that privilege." He made a few changes on the padd.

Brielle nodded, "Sounds like what a lot of us do, cover everywhere we have the skill to do. Not that I mind, just keep me out of engineering. I've been used as a medic more times than I care to count."

"Wouldn't know. I used to be a NCO we tend to specialize in one field. Which makes me an expert in security, but I'm a decent engineer, because of a certain conflict twenty years back. Officers tend to swap departments makes them jack of all trades. Makes sense if you have a CO who knows that most engineers lie about repair times." Michael chuckled.

"That is very true. Most know enough by the time they become commanding officers to understand how long it should take. Not that it means anything, as most repairs either are quick or take forever. I don't think there is an in between."

"Oh trust me we all build in buffer time. Don't give deadlines to young enlisted or officers... a stressed out crewman may make worse mistakes." Joustra looked at his padd. " Might send a few crewmen to your department so they can learn tactical next to security."

Brie nodded, "If they want to. I'd leave that up to them, some of them might not like that job."

"Ma'am it's not a thing that if they want too. We lose about 20% of the enlisted in 5 years, basically because fixing a replicator, charging rifles or calibrating a tricorder 8 hours a day, 5 to 7 days a week is boring as fuck. So I tend to spread my crewmen around departments just because engineering, operations, tactical, medical, science might be a better fit for them in the long run. Most of them are kids.... takes the average human at age 30 what is right for them. Had a young guy in the trenches during FG-432 siege, guy had three degrees in engineering, but Starfleet gave him a phaser and he died.... kid should have been chief engineer of a sovereign class "

"I meant more working with people they don't get along with. I have no issues with that but at the same time, there are many who would literally be at each other's throats and there's no changing that with any amount of training or discipline. However, all of those requests do have to go through me and the department chief of wherever you are placing them."

Michael raised an eyebrow. "Might not like a person, but i do expect a certain professional courtesy. And Commander one does not want to displease a warrant officer. I'll forward the list if your people have any problems with mine, please let me know." A slightly terrifying grin appaered on his face. " I'll sort it out." Standing up he headed for the exit.

Raising an eyebrow, Brielle watched him leave. "This should be interesting," she mumbled.
