Parent Teacher Conference

Posted on Thu Mar 11th, 2021 @ 2:35pm by Captain Henry Crow & Commander Edra Crow

Mission: Special Delivery
Location: Ship's Classroom

Henry met Edra outside the classroom door. He hadn't been busy with anything in particular when he'd received the call from Ms. Ballo, Marcus' primary teacher, who said she would like to see them both. He'd been in the principal's office enough as a kid to know what that meant.

"So do you think it's bad or really bad? I mean, I'm the Captain she can't really expel him." He hoped a little levity would help.

Edra frowned, looking ahead. "We've gotten a few messages from Ms. Ballo about his behavior, but I thought we'd taken care of that. So, I don't know what this is about at all." She closed her eyes a moment to take a breath. "Maybe we shouldn't assume the worst."

Just then the door opened and the teacher greeted them, welcoming them in. "Thank you both for such a quick response. I know it's not easy for either of you to have the time. As she sat she motioned to the chairs.

Henry sat, glancing around the room at the children's drawings and other artwork.

Edra took a seat next to her husband. The room was normally bright for keeping the kids alert during class, but at the moment lights were slightly dimmed for a more relaxed atmosphere. "We didn't want to keep you waiting. How can we help?"

"Well, Marcus has made great strides this year but today while he and the other children were sketching I heard him talking very low and I'm..concerned about him."

Henry looked at the teacher. "What did he say?"

The woman looked unsure but nodded. "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die."

Henry used 100% of his willpower not to laugh. He looked down but he felt eyes on him anyways.

Edra also had to mask her amusement as well, but still turned to Henry. "I'm gonna let you take this one," she told him. He was the reason, he could answer.

'Well, you see..it's an old song that he probably picked up from me. I don't think he meant anything by it."

"Could you perhaps have a talk with him and stress not to sing violent songs in class?"

"That's probably reasonable." Henry nodded.

Edra nodded as well. "We will talk with him, and make sure he realizes how serious something like this is. I'm sorry he caused you any alarm."

A few minutes later they stepped out into the hallway. Henry sighed before looking to his wife. "Well it could have been worse, I suppose. He could have recited Cocaine Blues." He tried to give her a disarming grin.

The only immediate answer he got in return was a raised eyebrow. "Not everything we have access to is appropriate for him to have access to. And this makes me wonder if I need to double check what you're letting him watch or listen to. I assumed we had restrictions in place to limit what he could watch. Was I wrong?" She wasn't mad. In fact, the incident had been amusing; however, she knew they needed to take this seriously, not just for Marcus, but for the image they projected to others on the ship, Starfleet and civilian.

"I think it's more likely he's heard me singing some of those songs when he's been attached to my hip. I'll be more careful."

Edra nodded, satisfied. Then, as the image of Marcus reciting the words Ms. Ballo had reported entered her mind again, and she giggled, not trying as much to keep it back this time.
