What the Future Holds

Mission: Shore Leave

Banks looked down at Keiran who had finally fallen asleep in his bed. She wasn't surprised she'd run the boy ragged playing for nearly three hours. Since her return she'd done her best to make up for lost time. She lightly kissed the boy's head and joined Chance on the couch in front of the fireplace. Their new home, their first real home, had recently been completed and only lightly furnished.

Tucking her legs beneath her she leaned on him slightly as the crackles and pops set the mood. "None of this seems real."

Chance put his arm around Trisha as she curled up beside him. The simple gesture reminded him of when they were first together. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "The house, or you walking normally again?" he asked teasingly.

"Everything. I never thought, sitting in that jungle, that I'd ever get to tuck him in again or be here with you or see this house or a million other things." She watched the flames for a moment. "I made promises that if I got off that planet I'd make changes. I feel like I need to keep my word."

He looked down at her. Millie had indicated this could be coming when they talked. "What kind of promises?"

"First is what we talked about in the holodeck, looking into options to expand our family. Second, I'm done leaving you two for reasons that aren't important or crucial for your safety. The other thing is, maybe, I might want to look into citizenship. You're one, Keiran's one...I don't want to be an outsider anymore."

He nodded as she spoke. The first, obviously, he knew about. The second, he wasn't sure he'd ever expected to hear her say. The surprise almost made him miss the last one. "Are you sure?" A part of him felt like an ass for asking that question after years of complaining that she left so often, but he was quite literally, shocked. "It's a complete 180 from what you've always wanted." He hoped that clarified his question if she thought the same of him.

She looked up at him. "You are what I have always wanted. The way we left things that day...I don't want to feel that again."

Chance had wondered for years now if they were doomed to always butt heads over that topic. That she was conceding was , he thought, more than he could have hoped for. He would not miss the knock-down, drag-out fights they had had over her assignments. "Really?" he asked, trying not to look like the cat with the canary.

"Really," she said softly, pulling his face down for a kiss.

He gladly obliged, continuing his forward motion until she was on her back. "We could start practicing in the hope your first promise is successful." The suggestion was whispered against her skin as his kisses moved down to her neck.

"Lots of practice," she murmured.

The next morning Banks sipped her coffee, flipping through a PADD. Her eyes looked up when Chance passed through the room. "You got a minute?"

He stopped and backed up a few steps until he was back in viewing range. "Give me one moment. Kieran had an accident this morning." He held a hand out even as she started to rise. "I got this. He's okay, I'm just cleaning it up. The remaining bit is reclamator fodder." He returned to their son's room to deposit the sheets in the reclamator and put new ones on.

In the meantime, freshly cleaned up, the boy ran out into the common room where Trisha was. "Mama!

The term of endearment almost brought her to tears after her recent misadventure. She scooped him up and seated him on her lap. "Good morning big man." Sometimes she was amazed how she lived without him or his father for so long.

He looked up at her, "You have a nother a'venture today?" He asked.

"Well, I thought you and I would roam the wilds of the Texas plain and search for the lost treasure."

His eyes lit up, "Ch-reashur???"

She nodded. "They say it's been missing for a thousand years and it's guarded by a big dragon but if we run into him I know how to beat him up."

At this point the boy could barely contain himself. "Yes! I wanna go!" He jumped down and ran to the door, only looking behind once he reached the blockage. He bounced, waiting for her to catch up.

She smiled. "I have to talk to your dad. Wait outside and figure out what direction we should go when I come out."

Kieran nodded and stepped out. As if on cue, Chance reappeared. "I'm glad that doesn't happen more often."

"It may if, uh, well my preliminary research pans out. There's a doctor who used to be one of the Federation's top geneticists and he's supposedly had some success in reproductive issues."

Chance stopped when he realized what she what she was referring to. "Really? I'd like to take a look too." He paused. "Is it all above board?" Sometimes these things weren't, and that worried him.

"It seems to show promise. It's definitely something I'm willing to try if it will get us where we want to be."

He cocked his head to the side. "That doesn't answer my question..." Which usually meant it was the answer he didn't want to hear.

She knew that look. "To answer your question...I don't know. I don't have any reason to think it's not but I also don't know why he went from being a very high ranking person in Federation Health to dropping off the map. I'm trying to figure that out."

He sat in front of her, taking her hands. That bit of information didn't sit well with him. "I want to do this with you, but not if it's going to take you from me. Let's sit down later and compare notes. We'll see if we can't figure out what happened. I may have ways to figure out what happened."

She gave a smile before standing. "If you'll excuse me I have to go lead a treasure hunt. She kissed him before heading in Kieran's direction.
