The Honor of Science

Edruj's transfer orders had come through she was officially a Department Head and couldn't be happier. She was to take over the Science Department aboard the USS Mercutio. Her hope now is to be taken seriously at first meeting. It seemed that whenever she told people she was a scientist she was not taken seriously due to her race.

She stood outside the XOs office. Well no better time like the present for a check in. Besides I don't even know where my quarters are. she thought. Breathing deeply she pressed the door chime.

On the other side of the door, Edra looked up from her work. "Enter." She wondered if this was the new science officer she'd gotten the memo about. As the door opened, she saw that she was correct. She'd read Edrij's resume before now, and had to admit, this was the first Klingon she'd seen in a Science role, but the woman's record spoke for herself, which is what Edra cared about most.

"Ms. Edruj, please come in." Edra stood to shake her hand as the Science Officer approached.

Edruj took the hand and shook it warmly. However she did not fully understand the penchant for putting formal titles before names that was not warranted such as Mr or Ms. She smiled as warmly as a Klingon could. "Commander I pleased to be here. Lieutenant Edruj Daughter of Thrawn reporting for duty as ordered." She adjusted her silver sash that bore the symbols of her family house and of the Empire she loved. She then snapped to attention as she finished reporting in.

Edra smiled. "At ease, Lieutenant. And, please, have a seat." Edra took her own. "Welcome aboard the USS Mercutio. We're glad to have you join us." She took a PADD that was on her desk and tapped on it a few times before handing it over. "On here are your quarters assignment, clearance, and any information you need to get yourself started. We've just returned...from a long trip, and have been granted 2 weeks of shore leave, so you have time for recreation or acclimating yourself to the ship. Any questions?"

"Not at all Commander. The time will be good to get to know the science team aboard this vessel. I am looking forward to the chance for discoveries in deep space." Edruj's deep voice while feminine was still deeper than most.

"Well, I hope we can accommodate that," Edra replied with a smile. She looked briefly at her computer before turning back to Edruj. "I'm sorry to cut this shorter than I normally do, but I have other reports to catch up on before shore leave begins. However, in two days, we, the captain and I are hosting a picnic at our home on Earth. As part of the crew, you are invited, and I'd love the chance to get to know you a bit more there, if you're able to make it. I can also introduce you to the rest of the crew."

"You honor me Commander, I will be there." To be invited to your Commanding Officer's home was quite the rare honor on Q'Onos. "I will let you get to your reports Ma'am. The labs I am sure are waiting for me." Edruj said as she stood to attention and smiled.

Edra smiled in return, and nodded an acknowledgment. "Dismissed, Lieutenant." As the Klingon left, the smile remained. Having new people on the crew would be good, give them a bit of a fresh start. She wondered if the Brass would fill more of their empty slots before the end of shore leave.
