Knock Knock

Mission: Special Delivery

Evelyn squinted her eyes as she placed the tiny component into the circuit board. When it was secured in place, she let out her breath she had been holding. After nearly two weeks it was done. Following shore leave which had not exactly gone to plan A, B, or C, she’d thrown herself back into her pet projects. It was much easier to excuse not seeking Millie out if she was working. She pushed those thoughts aside as she put on her safety eye wear and shrugged. No time like the present. She counted down from three and turned it on.

Her smile grew as her device lit up and began to hum. Diagnostics were checking out and she began to see the small pinprick of energy form about a foot above the emitter. It went from the side of a marble slowly expanding as it turned from a blue hue to purple. Suddenly the console sparked, and the energy bubble popped, sending a brief wave of air past her. Disappointed but not surprised she quickly typed up the results on her PADD. It was failure number eight.

She was about to open the console and replace the inner workings for attempt number nine when her door chimed. Evelyn looked at the chronometer and wondered who it could be at this hour. She stood and walked to the door, checking the monitor for who it was. She stopped cold when she saw Millie’s friend, the scary one, standing in the hall. Evelyn stepped back and hit the release.

Patricia looked at the Ensign. “It appears I owe you a thank you.”

Evelyn was surprised to say the least. “You do?”

“I hear you’re the reason Millie and I were located. If it hadn’t been for your…inquisitive nature we’d still be in a jungle.”

“Oh, yea, that. Well, I’m happy it all worked out.”

“Yes, it sure did. I did not think I’d ever see my husband or
son or anyone here ever again. So I owe you a deep gratitude.”

Evelyn nodded. “I’m just glad we could find you two and get you back home.”

“I wanted you to tell you that and one more thing.”
Here it comes. The speech about needing to talk to Millie.

“Okay, what’s the second?”

“Don’t ever fuckin’ dig into my files again.”

Evelyn almost would have laughed but the look in the other women’s eyes told her she was serious. “Absolutely, you never have to worry about that.”

Patricia’s stern look turned into a slight grin. “See you around.”

Evelyn watched her walk away down the corridor. That could have gone a lot worse she supposed. She still had use of all her limbs for instance.

She returned to the small work bench by the viewport and began working on attempt number nine. She thought no matter how long she served on this ship that woman would always intimidate her but in the same sense, she was definitely someone you wanted on your side and having her gratitude probably was a good thing.
